    changes throughout years?

Have a 18 Maverick X3 XRS and looking at picking up a used YXZ1000 for the wife and kids, I'm hoping it'll have similar performance for trails. Are there any changes throughout the years or are 16-18 the same and 19 only changes? Any potential pitfalls or things to lookout or avoid when buying used?

Only noticable change in the 16-18 years is that the 16's didnt have a temp reading on the dash, 17's and on did. Because of that buying a 16 could be riskier since there could be a chance they were overheated easier, no limp mode only a small dummy light on the dash to say youre up over 240F but will let you run at full power till it blows or you notice that light.

The SS flappy paddle change came out in '17.

Apart from colour, there are a number of small changes each year. The '19 model has loads of changes listed elsewhere in this forum.

Is there a list of the small yearly changes anywhere? I've searched but nothing yet.
I'm really not wanting to go 19 since just dropped 30k on the XRS and used are pretty discounted.

If your buying for the trails you should hold out for a deal on a 2019. That is the biggest reason for the gear change the 19 has so it will be more trail friendly. I have already seen one or two. Granted they were asking what you can get new for but realistically they are going to only be worth $15,000 here soon as the 2020's will be out and they will be discounting the 19's new and used one just won't be worth much more than $15k +- $1500 depending on condition.

I am certain you would regret not waiting on a 2019. There are so many changes that you don't get on earlier models but I realize the earlier models can be had really cheap since the 19 are so much better but still better to wait and save for a 19 IMO.

I agree but it's $12-13k for used vs $20k for 19. Maybe I need to see how heavily discounted any 18s are now, I don't think they're close to the $15k but could be wrong.

If you are looking for a trail one. Look for a used yxz that already has the gear redux... you can get some good deals. I honestly think the main things you should look for in a used one is the gear reduction, harness and an aftermarket cage is a must. Even if you pay 15k for a used one with the gear reduction and a cage that's worth it over a brand new 19 IMO.

If you end up waiting for a 19 to be discounted the first thing you should buy is an aftermarket cage for it.

If you shop around you can get a 19 base model, the gray one, for 15.5 K. No freight or set-up B.S., just go to ATV Trader and type in 19 Yamaha yxz. Rodney Vaneferin that races SxS's, shop is in MI and usually has the best prices. At least going this route you'll have the lower gears, almost a must have, and a warrantee. I think Rodney's shop is Powersports One.

If you go used you can buy with the gear reduction and other mods you prefer. In my case I prefer the 45/15 gear reduction to the 2019 gears. I don't mind the heat in the cabin as most all of my riding is in the winter.
