On the clutch model some linkage bolts have came loose and or fallen out completely. I would remove the inside plastic and look, may be a similar problem. If the bolts that hold the actuator came loose it may be moving the actuator rather than the engagement shaft.

Look at the dash. If you have any new codes or new symbols it went into safe mode and stops the shifter on the SS.

I doubt he would hear it trying to shift if that were the case. I could be wrong though.

As Bljohns said. Look at the clutch linkage. Been noted more than a few times on the SS preventing gear changes.

Sucks that you had the problem but a five minute fix is way better than dealing with a dealer.

Mine did the same thing. The problem is, the factory threaded a bolt into the lever, but the metal is so thin it doesn't hold the pressure of the cantilevered linkage. It would be better if it had a fork design lever. When mine failed, the bolt came partway out of the lever, and bent a bit. So I replaced it with a longer bolt and nylock nut on the backside. Its not coming out again.
