Getting ready to (finally) pull the trigger on a new cage and looking for opinions on whats out there.

Looking very seriously at UTV Inc's Bomber cage.

I've researched most. Did consider LSK and Cage WRX but decided against a DIY due to time constraints. I don't need it quickly, I just don't have time to assemble, powdercoat, install.

So, among the assembled cages what are the experiences with UTV Inc's Bomber cage and how it stacks up against the other cages.

Opinions? Experiences?
Thanks

whats the lead time on the UTV Inc? i am a LSK dealer and can have the WIY shipped out asap, and you can get it welded in 6-8hrs, powdercoat should take less than 3 days. personally i would do WIY as its way faster than any leadtimes for a completed cage. also, it can be built on your car, so if there are any discrepancies in your frame or the jig another cage qsas built off, it wont matter as much.

You guys are killin me ;).

You know I love fabricating my own stuff, and I desperately wanted to do an LSK cage for exactly the reasons you state. That and its been years since I had a good excuse to really hone my TiG skills.

But right now my job has me TDY quite a bit. Talk about the "perfect storm". Im a cyber security specialist with the govt during the day and gunsmith at night. Awesome for business, sucks for free time. At least until after January 20th. But then, if Biden gets in I'll be even more swamped trying to finish rifle builds before Harris issues an executive order re-enacting the ban.

Maybe I can put off SWMBO till March / April and do an LSK cage after this $hit storm is over.

You might be hearing from me soon thesandaddict.

Thanks

no pressure, i can definitely help you out on the cost to sweeten the deal. but if your set on a cage thats ready to go, i ran the Cagewrx Super Shorty and loved it. i bought it 100% TIG welded and now another member has it. i have no idea what shipping/freight costs would be, anyways, let me know, i can usually get them out pretty quick depending on inventory

You da man thesandaddict.

Talked it over with SWMBO and she agrees better to do it right than to do it right now. Thinkin the LSK cage.

Guess now its just a case of getting out the helmet and filler rod.
Thanks

CageWRX will sell you an assembled cage, the problem is the shipping cost. You also don't want to buy one already powder coated since you will want to add your own tabs for lights, whip, antenna, etc

Actually sat down SWMBO and after tense negotiations LMAO, I'm doing a LSK Radius cage for her.

Infact just pulled out the TiG, picked up a new bottle of gas, popped new batteries in the ESAB and gonna spend a couple hours stacking dimes to knock the rust off before I order up the kit.

So CageWRX Super Shorty cage showed up last Sunday. I thought it was going to be an LSK radius cage, but, hey I'm just the mechanic here...... I ordered an additional overhead center tube so that I had a place to hang a Tusk overhead bag.

Got it cleaned and ready for tacking last night.
117250

Took an hour today and tacked it together. Now to get it welded up. But before I can do that I need to get SWMBO's ride put back together.
117251

She's chomping at the bit since just about every weekend has been in the 50's and sunny. Figure by the time its ready to go we'll have deep snow and 20 below. LOL

FWIW, I LOVE my Cage wrx on my 17 SS-SE Had it powder coated red after adding all the tabs for lights and window nets. Only problem is I added a couple other brackets later, I Found two cans of spray paint at Home Depot that I thought matched. I tried the first but it was too dark so I went to try the other can, only to discover my English Bull Terrier picked it up and ran around my yard with it in his mouth! My friend then visited in his new White Dodge Ram and Bandit welcomed him by running around his truck with the paint can in his mouth! Yes he did puncture it and proceeded to spray paint all four sides of Kenny's truck. So in my case I had to add $600 to the cost of my cage. (What the bodyshop charged me to get all the paint off of his truck)

ROFLMAO

Yeah, I've had days like that. Haven't had to repaint my neighbors truck, yet.....

I do like the CageWRX cage. I spent an extra $20 at AA Mfg picking up some trick tabs, lightbar mounts, and a couple other tabs.

I also bought a second center roof tube. This way SWMBO can keep her Tusk roof bag.

Since I'm doing it from the ground up I went ahead and drilled the cage to run my wiring thru the tubes rather than string wire loom.

I am really glad everyone beat me into doing a WIY cage rather than the Bomber cage I was looking at.

I know there are a lot of videos out there on the LSK cages but I haven't found many (any really?) On the CageWRX so I took a minute and put together a time lapse of assembling and tacking it together if anyone's interested. About 4 minutes of your life you'll never get back...

Sooooooo, I know I'm not going to be done with this anytime soon due to work constraints..... But....

When I was ordering the cage all the places sounded like getting 2 whip tabs was something special..... yeah, no.

I spent about $20 at AA Mfg and found ALL the tabs I thought I might need.

117261

4 lightbar mounts, 2 mirror mounts, 2 whip mounts, 4 extended trick tabs, 6 regular trick tabs.

I didn't want to mount my whips up high, I wanted them on the downtubes so I ordered 2 AA-237-C which will allow them to be mounted horizontal on the cage downtubes.
117262

Rather than use the mounts that came with my mirrors I opted to use large trick tabs. AA-208-B
117263

117264

For the lightbar they only had ones for 1.25" tube. Ill use these for both the front bumper and open them up for the 22" overhead lightbar.
AA-659-A
117265

117266

I'm lazy, so two headset / helmet hanger tabs.
117267

I also added several (10+?) Trick tabs to use for camera and windshield mounts.

For those of us "not in the know" a trick tab is a tab that can be mounted on any diameter tube and come out perpendicular to the tangent of the tube.

BLUF, I wish someone had educated me on how cheap tabs could be and just how many options were out there when you do a DIY cage.

Sorry, ill put away my bully pulpit and go back to Tig welding now... yep, another 4 minutes of your life you'll never get back. LOL.

Awesome - will be doing a WIY kit in the future and this is great. The tabs you found rock and will help a ton! And appreciate the PN#s too - that makes searching through 38+ pages of tabs easier (y).

Keep it coming!

I've only had the time to get a heavy tack on it. Popped it off and put the stock cage back on till I'm done.

But, while I had everything apart I went ahead and Tig'd a lightbar mount on the front bumper. I also added a trick tab as a camera mount. Total cost $6.68. I know this leaves the front lightbar exposed, but I paid $15.00 for it with the expectation that I'd have to replace it. Was happily surprised that it both wasn't damaged and it was still water tight.

After welding these light bar mounts on I'm thinking I'll probably use 2 of the large trick tabs to mount the rooftop lightbar using its regular mount. I'm not too thrilled with cutting the roof to allow them to pass thru. Dont want to listen to it rattle. And would rather not have to remove the lightbar to remove the roof.

Also thinking I'll probably add a a couple pieces of reinforcement to the rear downtube to mount the fire extinguisher instead of hose clamps. Probably drill a 1/2" hole and weld in bar stock then tap the bar stock for mount bolts.

Caught a break today and was able to take the day and get all the cage welding done. Took being a little creative to get to all the joints.
117344

Did dig a little too deep trying to flatten out some of my heavier tack welds.
117345

For these, once all the welds are ground flat I'll grab a 1/16th tungsten and 1/16 filler, dial back to about 20 amps and fill these areas. Just need to make sure that I don't push in so much heat that the joint becomes brittle.

Still have the two rear tubes but those won't go in until the welds are ground flat.
117346

Also have the tabs and Dzus fastener plates to put in. I did get over ruled (surprise) on the light bar mount location. Going to use two large trick tabs on the dual ceiling bars and drill a pair holes to mount the light bar right where the radius transition is.

Still have to remove the lightbar to remove the roof but at least I won't have the roof "tin canning" around the mounts.

Try to be less of an idiot...

So had a little time today so I figured I'd go ahead and make the 3/4" mounts for the fire extinguisher.
117370

Got them done. Marked out and drilled holes for the mounts. With the last of my Argon got them welded in place.

Ground them flush with the tubes.

117371

All set to dry fit everything together just to make sure.

117372

Yeah...no.

Time to decide if its better to move the whip mounts or redo the fire extinguisher mounts. 🤦‍♂️

Yep, I'm an idiot....
