Brand new YXZ in Green River Utah

2465 Views 15 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  CORR2
Racing motocross most my life, I never thought I would own something with 4 wheels ( don't tell my buddies). However, I wanted to say thanks to this site and all the great posts that helped me pick out a few items for my YXZ. Here is a video link of Green River Utah. It was a bit too hot to pull out the good cameras but I thought some of you might like to see the area. I plan to build a 3 Axis brushless gimbal that I can mount hanging down, so in the future, the motion will be much smoother. On board video was shot with a Sony POV 1000v.

Or for those that want to increase the resolution or are watching from an iPhone:

Welcome to the forum and congrats on accepting the change to 4 wheels. LOL

Nice video and great looking riding area.
Looks like some fine riding there, awesome scenery. Good job on the video, from inside, outside and overhead even. Like that spare tire carrier, never seen one like that before.

Oh, Thanks! I still race MX but I will admit this thing is seriously fun!

I got that particular spare tire carrier because it can go flat/level like you see in the video or tilt at an angle. It does not block the rear view at all. It actually provides shade for my Australian shepherd when we go neighborhood cruising. Having the tire up there also lets me attach mesh/net all the way around keeping stuff from launching out. See pictures. I ordered mine with the stock 7" deep YXZ offset but if you want it lower or higher you can order a different offset mount. The 28" tire was barely touching the edge of my roof so if your spare is bigger than 28" you may need to trim the hood or angle it back a little.

Welcome! Nice vid there. Beautiful scenery around Green River. Reminds me a bit of the San Rafael Swell. Utah is one of my favorite riding destinations.
As a past MX racer myself from the 1980's racing in Colorado's SRAC I'm more interested in your bikes in the background, one looks vintage, is that a Maico? Couldn't help but notice the trophy wall either!:tickled_pink:
If you like old school, you will get a kick out of this clip below. I have access to a national level track and supercross track behind my house and I switched back to racing two strokes (new model KTM) of all things, mainly for the fun factor ! I got into motocross late but did about 180 desert races as a pro in the 90's. I much prefer motocross. I don't think I will ever be clearing 130 feet on my YXZ but I will get it over on the outdoor track ( not seen in this clip below and the outdoor track is about 2.8miles long), so stay tuned. :

The old bike you see in the background is actually a bike I was able to buy back that I had as a kid. It had been sitting since 1976, untouched. It's a 1973 Hodaka Dirt Squirt, 100cc. Runs perfect with about 30 hours total on it! I thought if I end up sitting out with injuries sometime I plan spiff it up and restore it.

I've been thinking of this also -- I'm currently looking at the Zhiyun Rider M with the Bluetooth wireless remote control (ZW-B01). There's also an IOS and Android App available for it to. Seems to have good reviews and should fit well for our application - 3 C-Notes for everything .. .. Might give it an eyeball.

LUV the color or your ride -- Good Choice .. .. .. :)
Thanks for the share. Looks like a lot of fun.
Welcome to the club! Great video of the Green River area. I'll have to venture beyond Moab next time to check it out. If you and your videographer (wink) can capture more of the slow technical CVT required rock climbs it'd really help those like me on the fence to do the 70/30 mod. From what I saw on your one climb you appeared to almost idle up the thing. Rsessions has done some nice videos too with the same gearing but capturing the technical from outside the car is key. Oh and you're running 28's too...Thanks for sharing!

That track is awesome, looks like a lot of fun, and I love 2 strokes, grew up racing them too.
Sure, I plan to film more of that and I have my 3-Axis brushless gimbal with encoders designed/made. Thus, in the future, I can deliver smooth video on board, or attached with a 8 foot extension, or outside with the same unit.

My first credit goes to Rsessions, because after talking on the phone with him, I went with a lot of what he said on trust. He was dead on. It was better or as good as he told me it was. Because I'm too cheap to buy a new $8,000 trailer, I went with 28" tires. However, I feel I could climb a wall with that size. I would not even hesitate having 31" in Moab other than my silly trailer/windshield clearance factor.

To me the 70% reduced gear feels so powerful that if you were in two wheel drive you could wheelie up something or even loop over if traction was good. It's extremely torque-like, much better than a RZR, because, unlike a RZR you have massive power at your fingertips if you got on something sketchy with the option of clutch control.

Going down is awesome. The gained engine breaking is such an advantage. To be able to push gas + break and know you can shift or hold the clutch is beyond worth the modification. This is also a huge advantage in faster, twisty-turn stuff because I can get off the breaks due to the increased engine breaking via the 70/30 mod and just fan the clutch a little; not as good as a dirt bike but very close.

Things I don't like:

1) I'm used to doing a trail like Poison spider (Arch and back) in an hour on a KTM so even the YXZ overall time seems very slow yet the 70/30 mod is perfect for a trial like that. However, on faster stuff, or when I hit long smooth sections I would like the option to be able to at least do 95mph. Thus, my perfect wish list would be a transmission with a wide 6 gear in a 6 speed model. I don't like the idea of a wide 5th because I like railing at the 40 to 60mph zone and would not like the power loss due to only having a wide 5th gear.

2) I don't like going on Moab trails AND traveling with friends that do not own YXZ's!! This sucks! They all just PUTT on the slow stuff but they maintain this painfully slow pace on the smooth stuff and my wife and I just sit and wait. I would rather all my friends have YXZ's because 5 or 6 easy sections and it seems I'm 20 minutes ahead of them having massive fun and they are just lagging. That is something I did not realize. I may need to invest in a gas powered margarita machine and inflatable bar so I have something to do while I wait for them. lol That or I need to get my motocross buddies into this. I just don't understand mellow cruising on smooth stuff with this machine. ;-)

You appear to not have a Rekluse as rsessions has, true? Great point about running Moab on a bike vs. SxS. Waaaaay slower yet a different kind of fun; one that your wife (mine too) really enjoys. You hit the main reason I haven't started budgeting for the 70/30 mod, I don't want to lose the top end speed. I'm still racing and playing in Moab so I want it ALL- crawling and top end. The last couple site visits I've watched some videos becoming more intrigued by the mod and thinking if someone doesn't come up with the solution we're wanting then I may have to bite! Your video helped! Keep it up!

No, actually I did install the Rekluse but with a heavy spring. I went with the Stock clutch so I will see how it holds up. So sorry for that not being clear. I'm 50/50 on whether I would install a Reckluse clutch now that I have one. I'm a 100 percent I would do the 70/30 again. If I did 60 percent or more Moab type trails, I would for sure want the Rekluse. If I did 30 precent Moab type rides and 70 percent more race oriented stuff I would not get it. For the price I think I would opt for Weller dual carbon exhaust and Weller tuning. I want more power, but i'm not hip on the turbo because I think with the 70/30 it's over kill and with the increased compression I'm guessing that turbo will pop on downshifts. I talked with the guys at Tubeworks and they said they could possibly get me a taller 5th... So maybe you can call them and ask that if that is a real option. My wife loves the Rekluse because she does not kill it on technical stuff and she is not a bad shifter . She also raced dirt bikes for about 8 years, so she knows how to work thru the gears. She is actually the reason we got a YXZ. lol

Great feedback! The taller 5th gear has been brought up though I recall it couldn't be done for some reason. Worth asking again!
