I’ve been getting a few flats lately and am looking into getting a DOT style tire when the time comes. I ride in the mountains of pa with a mix of hard pack, mud, rocky trails and coal spoil piles. I want a tire that is light weight or as close as possibly to stock so I don’t lose any power and the same height. (2020 3 pedal 29inch tires) does anyone have any recommendations and what size do you guys run? Stock widths or the same all around?

i think most will recommend aftermarket wheels as well so you can square up the car and run all 4 the same size
i had great luck with the CST Behemoth, Arisun Afershocks and Fuel Gripper although none were DOT approved to my knowledge (maybe the Grippers)
i ran 30x10x15 all around and besides a few miscalculations on my part i had no issues with any of them

DOT isn’t necessary for me, just looking for that truck like style for better wear when we ride roads to access trails. Did you notice any drastic difference in power or drivability? I’m assuming they are a thicker ply and heavier than stock

I can say that the Tensor Regulator tires have been great for all around riding for 7000 plus miles. They do very well for trail and mountain riding on rocky trails. Also the handling on pavement is great and we traverse a few highways here in Montana that have us at over 60 mph and steering is smooth. Great on gravel roads traveling city to city at 45-55 mph smoother than any vehicle we have.

Nice to have all wheels same size to rotate those tires regularly and lots of maintance on the YXZ at over 9100 miles on stock drivetrain and gearing also. I can only imagine how many miles i would have if it were not for at least two years of down time and health issues. And now winter is here and not much riding going to happen with daytime high temps in 20’s to 30’s.

my YXZ had a slip on and ecu reflashed by Weller so i felt a little more power but once i went to 30s, if i did lose power i didnt notice it at all. i drove the piss out of that car and it never had an issue spinning them. i feel like the Fuel Grippers where the lightest and most predictable, but i also had them the longest so i had a lot of miles with them feeling them out. the Arisuns were GREAT in the rocks, but i rolled the car and hit the side walls and got bubbles in 1 and blew another apart (thats 100% on me)
the CST was pretty good, only sold them because i bought them already used and one had some plugs and theyre were only 4, and then put another 1000 on them and they were starting to show signs of wear (and i wanted 5 matching for a spare)

I have the Kanati Terra Master.
DOT approved and not too heavy.
They have lasted well and fixed the handling issues. Was scary loose in washes.
I installed the 30" tire on the stock wheels and was pleased.

I ran a set of Tensor Regulators on aftermarket wheels and only got about 4000 miles on them before switching over to 14" General Grabber AT2 truck tires. I now have nearly 6000 miles on the AT2's and they still probably have 70% tread left. I do rotate my tires every 1,000 miles, but I ride 50/50 street/dirt and live where off roading includes riding over sharp volcanic cinders, so those may be part of the reasons the Regulators didn't wear all that well. I've kept the original wheels/tires for when I go to the dunes, as they seem to work perfectly fine in the sand, for the way I ride. Regardless of the wheels you run, get out there and RIDE!
