Installing GYTR Gen 1 Turbo kit with some tweaks, FTECU or Big Name tuning?

Hoping to get the last tuning piece of the puzzle sorted so I can get my GYTR turbo kit installed soon, I am tired of having boxes of parts gather and not getting to enjoy them. The problem is that the kit has undergone some changes and will likely need some custom tuning due to some tweaks to the kit, such as:

1) using the Gen 2 GT2554R turbo on the Gen 1 (massaged flange/collector) manifold. With the boost coming on earlier, this could possibly leave some to be desired with the tuning on the Gen 1 GYTR Turbo ECM? I have heard that both the Gen 1 and Gen 2 GYTR Turbo ECM's are basically the same tune, but this is not 100%.
2) using a bellmouth turbo outlet to v-band to 3" to 2.5" custom exhaust (using KRX Trinity Stage 5 full 2.5" through muffler with YXZ mount bracket). Likely the bigger component to lead to the absolute need for custom tuning, but desired to keep backpressure at the lowest possible levels while providing optimum boost response.
3) further massaging to the Internal wastegate as I've heard the smaller units (such as the GT2554R) with very free flowing exhaust can lead to boost creep issues. If anything this will help stabilize tuning and keep boost control effective.
4) using the Gen 2 water to air radiator (from the YFZ450R). This should not really affect tuning and rather stabilize IATs.

Some tuning aids that will be in place:
1) AEM WBO2 to give some visibility of A/F.
2) AEM boost gauge/controller. Likely will not touch boost for a long while.

Initially I plan to get it together and monitor AFR to see how it looks and the machine feels, but based on my reading custom tuning will be eminent mainly because of the exhaust. I am not sure if this is mostly because of tuning around boost creep (with exhaust), or if the machine will just run leaner with the exhaust even with stable boost control.

Ultimately if tuning is in the near future then I am trying to determine if the FTECU is something that is manageable. I do of course have the GYTR Turbo kit (Gen 1) ECM to start, so it seems that will get tuning fairly close. From there all I feel that needs to be done is ensuring that boost control is effective (ie. 6-7psi) throughout the power band even in the taller gears and that the A/F is reasonable and rich. I am really not trying to get TOO crazy or aggressive with the tuning at all, more so want something reliable and to minimize exhaust backpressure (on the turbo, engine, etc) while being as responsive as possible.

Honestly I'd MUCH prefer just getting a tune from a big name and calling it a day, but am concerned for myself (and for them lol) that it will be a huge undertaking to get this right, which means I'd constantly be mailing my ECM back and forth. With that I am considering just getting the FTECU and attempting to modify the original GYTR Turbo Kit ECM file as needed (minimally).

Anyone out there have any input?

Thanks,
Rob

At this point Im optimistic that FTecu will complete the request, but not so optimistic that this ECU will be my long term solution.
Yeah the ECU is a turd. I'd really like to upgrade but it's just a little too much to spend at the moment. However if I would have just done it in the beginning I would have been better off today. But that's how we learn.

Timeline:
Pre-6/29/22- Had numerous conversations with FTecu leading up to purchase, was assured would work with the GYTR ECU.
6/29/22- Purchase full FTecu tuning package.
7/1/22- FTecu delivered.
7/3/22- Bought new PC laptop to work with FTecu.
7/4/22- Tried reading GYTR ECU with FTecu and identified what seems to be corrupted read data.
7/5/22- Contacted FTecu and verified issue with being unable to read GYTR files without corrupted data. Instructed to email the read files to define and it should take a couple of days to resolve.
7/11/22- No responses to prior email so pinged asking for update.
7/12/22- Responded that they have a large software update push prioritized for month end and would get on this directly thereafter.
7/23/22- Pinged again asking if all was on schedule for month end resolution.
7/27/22- Responded that software update has been delayed due to short staffing issues. Replied asking if there was any date in sight as I've been considering just getting a standalone. No response.
8/5/22- Pinged again asking for some guesstimate on timeline, if nothing then returning the tool would be most ideal. Replied with new help coming onboard and progress will begin then. Replied that will check back in the next Friday.
8/12/22- Pinged again asking for update. The new help replied that this was now his top priority. Asked for any idea of ETA.
8/16/22- Responded that the aforementioned update was pushed and they will need a little more time, wanted more clarification on ECU information. Responded with that info (adding more to be as thorough as possible) again.
8/24/22- Pinged again asking for update. Responded that they are working on it, let them know if have any more questions. I again asked that I'd like some sort of ETA, if one can be provided. No response.

It is now 8/30 and will ping them again later this week at which point it will be 2 months since initial inquiry (with ~2 day expectation of resolve lol). I am hoping for some resolve very soon now, I do believe having this tools support will be good for the GYTR ECU community so will keep pushing for it.

Timeline update EDITS-
9/1/22- Pinged again asking for status. They responded that they appreciate my patience through the staffing issues and will have it done as soon as possible. I replied asking if they can give a firm commitment that this will be resolved by month end (9/30/22), to no reply.
9/9/22- Pinged again asking for any updates/ETA/or general good news since 1 month of making the top priority on the list. No reply.

It sounds like the same old song from FTEcu.

For sure. Pretty bad when cant even respond with a 30 day commitment after 2 months of prior delays, on something that was initially stated to take only a couple of days. I think it is just going to be a case of they get to you when they get to you, as they march to the beat of their own drum. Hopefully they deliver very soon.

Yeah, I've been trying! Looks like I have a choice to keep this up indefinitely, or draw some line in the sand and go firm on the return/refund at that point. Late next week I will probably go this route with the next reach out (if don't hear back first lol).

Frustrating. Did you point your FT contact at this thread and how many people are very interested in this?

It would be a really really nice way to be able to do everything the canned tunas are doing, and be able to make adjustments wherever you were. It would still be annoying because I believe you have to be engine-off while modifying the tables v.s. a decent standalone/PC5/6 with an autotune-like function that will adjust live/on the fly. But it would unlock other important settings modifications.

I did actually tell them early on there was much interest (thread about it online, etc); but didn't seem to generate any interest to get it done. I do feel they will eventually get it done but at this point I am not holding breath on it being before November/December. It's just going to take me pestering them relentlessly more than likely, which I may just keep on doing to help others (maybe even myself) out in the future. Or I can just request a sincerely firm return and sometimes that helps too, but they also could just say "send it back" and then the FTecu GYTR ECU project is certain to be dead.

I think the tool would be a great way to tinker to get things close (and correct the other lil gimmicky stuff), but agree that as long as we are stuck with this open loop ECU then that Dynojet PC6/Autotune solution is probably the best we are going to get to fine tune the fueling. More than likely we will go through all this crap and then in 2024 Yamaha will finally redesign the engine control and make it closed loop lol.

I wanna hit the “like” button, but I don’t.
Guessing that they are putting their time into what makes them $ and yxz probably isn’t it.

And I honesty wouldn't blame them one bit, they definitely need to follow what brings them success in business. I do think this could be something that leads them to much more revenue, but perhaps not the heaviest hitting one.

Anyway they should stop saying things like "only take a couple days", "you are on top of priority list", etc; as they did when I spoke of wanting to return the product. Now that I have been patient it has just taken me down a path of complete ignore, hopefully this means they are closing in on completion but not holding breath for sure. The best plan would be to simply shoot me straight and say "We don't care about this as it is not likely to lead to top sales potentials of other markets of which we need to focus".

My next ping I'm going to go ahead and go back to asking for return of item if not offered some good news by 9/30.

Hey Rob, by the way I’m doing my install now. What do you recommend for an A/F meter and where in the pipe before the muffler should it be?
Hey Rob, by the way I’m doing my install now. What do you recommend for an A/F meter and where in the pipe before the muffler should it be?
Good question on the meter setup. I ended up going with a trio of the newest AEM x-series gauges (WBO2 PN 30-0300, Boost/controller 30-0352, Coolant Temp for Intercooler 30-0302) and the Weller 3 gauge mount.

BUT if I end up with the Dynojet PC6/Autotune and find it useful then having gone with their POD-300 display setup would've been the cleanest/easiest thing to do. Just so hard to tell which way to go when you can't even get started lol, but I am really hoping I can use FTecu to do everything and get it good enough where I don't even need the Dynojet bits for now.

As for WBO2 location, after turbo and before muffler wherever you can fit it. Don't have it facing down, face it more upward than downward, but not straight up either. I saw someone post this pic somewhere and it looks good to me.

After much patience with FTecu, the line has been drawn in sand:

10/1/22: Another 10 days gone by since last email of which I’ve had no response, and for that matter no responses (to subsequent inquiries) for what has now been one entire month. If there is nothing solid to offer with development by end of next week 10/7/22 (which will be over 3 months since the initial request), I will be requesting a return on this as I can literally wait no longer listening to the crickets. Sad because there are quite a few from the platform awaiting this development to purchase the tool as well, and returning it surely will kill the project. My initial phone call about this issue I was told it would take a few hours of development, but plan on a few days just in case. For what it is worth my life (time) is also important and this has proven to be a colossal waste of both thus far.

10/10/22: Another 10 days gone by and no responses/updates for the past 40 days, I suppose that means we have not gotten anywhere or will not be getting anywhere anytime soon. My time is up over here, so please just provide an RMA for this package, attached is all of the order detail from 6/29/22.

This is a sad day for the YXZ GYTR Turbo platform because many others were awaiting this development to order the product, but after 100 days now passed I just want to move on with my life in another direction and I suppose you could do without the stress from my inquiries as well.

Well, you tried. And good info on tuning would only help those in the future.
In my case, I’ve decided that since everything is working so well, I’m content.

This is not to say that things won’t happen in the future.

But the GYTR turbo is doing as promised as is the Alba tune. It all works perfectly so far. At 3800 feet and sea level.

Thanks again for all your efforts. Gotta be frustrating 🤨
