Hello YXZ members,

First a quick introduction since this is my first post. I'm Luke and I currently live just west of Knoxville TN. Before my YXZ, I rode (and still ride) a Yamaha Raptor 700 mostly at Windrock since i only live about 30 minutes away.

I picked up my new YXZ about two weeks ago and have since put only 27 easy miles on her. I was planning to go to Windrock tomorrow and as I was checking the oil (after a proper warm up) , I found it to be very low. I then noticed some water in the air box drain tube. So i removed it and almost immediately frothy oil started to pour out. She only has 27 miles on her so I am a little worried about this. Any ideas as to what is causing this? Is this something I should be concerned with and take it back to the dealer?

You do know you don't screw the oil dipstick in when you check the oil.

Chocolate milk color has always indicated water in oil for me. Drown my dirt bike in a race this summer and took 3 oil changes to get it all out. Sight glass showed frothy chocolate milk...

Very strange for that to be in the air box, would expect that from oil tank or out of oil pan not air box. Before you get too worried do a oil and filter change and check the condition of oil. If it doesn't look like that refill to proper lever and run her. These engines are really solid stock and even w/you add a pipe and flash they can handle ALOT of abuse. You or dealership would have had a pretty good over heat and continue to run for you to blow your Head gasket. I overheated mine before l did the relocate and it was still fine. Might check your t-stat or remove it, if you do have a milkshake in your oil take back for warranty.

Thank you to everyone who replied.

I drained the oil from both the engine and oil tank and after letting it sit for about two hours in a glass jar, there was no indication of water / coolant in it.

I removed the secondary air filter cover and found more frothy oil. I agree that it is a mixture of oil and water, but I'm not sure why it's in my air box.

I've cleaned everything thoroughly and will keep a close eye on it.

Thanks again

Luke

I went to the dealer on Saturday morning and told my situation to the gentleman behind the service department counter. When i finished my telling him my story, he said "is a YXZ a motorcycle?" I said it was a side by side. He replied that they don't have much experience with those. I guess that's a good thing! Ironically he was wearing a Yamaha t-shirt. So I thanked him for his time and made a mental note to myself to never take my YXZ here for any type of service.

I changed the oil and filter and ran it about 30 miles later that day and everything is fine. I'm going to assume the dealer overfilled the oil reservoir before i purchased it, which caused it to backup into the air box.

That was going to be my guess. Possible they even noticed the problem when they started it the first time, so they may have drained and refilled the oil and were afraid of putting too much in. If that's the case, they probably filled it to the dipstick level with it screwed in, (which would be low) just to be cautious of overfilling again.

Good call on not taking it back to them.

This happened to me as well. The dealer way overfilled the oil. When I got it home and rode it up and down the street it started to smoke like a freight train. I thought the engine blew. I also drained out about 10oz of light brown looking oil from the secondary airbox. Not sure exactly what it is. I did an oil change as well and swapped the plugs. All seems well for now. I did call Yamaha Customer Care just to make them aware of the situation and get it documented in case something happens in the future.

I am a bit puzzled on where the water comes from in the airbox as well. After changing the oil and plugs, and riding a few times I pulled the nipple on the bottom of the airbox off. Some water drained out. Not a lot but a little tiny bit. I just chalked it up to condensation, but I'm still not comfortable with that explanation as I live in CO which is one of the driest places humidity wise and I never drove the machine through water... Still not 100% sure.

I think this stems from the lack of dealers understanding this machine. If you look in the manual it states you have to warm the engine up to check the oil. I suspect the dealer I bought it from pulled the dipstick and didn't see any oil and it and "topped it off"... big mistake.

I just checked the oil on mine, and had some milky marks on the dip stick... wiped it off, put it back, and pulled it back out, and same thing... My gut dropped. Im going to drain the oil tonight and see if its milky. The car runs fantastic. But i think i know whats happening. At least im still within my warranty.

I have a couple milky spots on my dipstick, but you can tell the oil is golden brown so I am not really worries about it. I think I am going to just purchase the extended warranty for peace of mind in case something happens in the future.

The machine runs really good so I am thinking things are probably ok but only time and use will tell.

Just read that it could be from not letting the motor reach oporating temps before shutting it back off. Sometime i use it just around the property and it never gets a chance to get warm. Just 1st gear putt putt to the end of the property with the dog in the passenger seat kind of thing. Combustion moisture or something...
