Long story short, I was on my way to King of Hammers last Saturday. I was about 30 miles west of Barstow on the 58, on cruise control in the slow lane, not a single person on the road. I look in my mirror and there was a lifted jeep in my lane going at least 85-90 from what I could tell. I was waiting for him to get over to pass me (its a 2 lane road) but he never did. All of the sudden the distracted driver hits me from the rear, his front two tires hop up onto my trailer and hits my yxz hard. Thankfully my trailer didn't come off the hitch and nobody was hurt, the trailer seems to be fine other than a couple scratches. But my yxz took a big hit and bent the frame. It's hard to tell from pictures but it bent the diff mount and now the diff is cocked to the right. My fireball A arms are bent and the whole entire rear end is out of whack, it looks like its crab walking when going straight, left shock is bent as well. I also have rails on the trailer that hold down the front tires, those flew off on impact (and unfortunately fell on the road and caused an elderly couple to blow their tire), now my steering is out of alignment probably from a tweaked tie rod and my front drivers CV has a lot of play in it.

A huge disappointment, I know a general rule of thumb is if the frame is bent then its totaled, I am bringing it to a shop near me to get an estimate sometime next week. I put a lot of money into this and love taking it out, especially after I did the long travel and Weller turbo.

Like I said I'm glad no one was hurt and could have ended up a lot worse, the person who hit me was very apologetic and admitted he was at fault.

Thankfully I insured it before KOH, I've had it since April and decided to insure it in July. The driver of the Jeep is keeping in touch with me and is accepting all damage to the yxz, and all possible damages to my truck and trailer.

I did stay at KOH for a couple days but was planning on staying from Saturday-Saturday. I drove it a little bit but nothing crazy. It was easily noticeable through the whoops that the rear shock was bent and it wasn't going through the full travel. So I just drove it from camp to Hammertown and up to chocolate thunder a couple times taking it easy.

If my insurance declares it totaled I will most likely buy it back with a salvage title. I love this thing way too much to get rid of it, I wouldn't want to buy another yxz and do the same stuff I did to this because it's just too expensive, and I can never see myself in a canam or rzr, the belts just make them feel anticlimactic

I saw a decently built 2018 x3 for sale at KOH and talked to the owner, he was a really cool dude and took me for a ride. He said he had a stage 5 tune on e85 with launch control, stock turbo I believe. When he floored it don't get me wrong it was fast, but my stock motor with a Weller turbo felt so much quicker and faster than this "built" x3

@2017ssse power to weight, with no belt slip. 🫡 YXZ FTW.

That sucks bro, I was looking forward to riding pismo with ya sometime soon. Hope all gets fixed or replaced to normal.

FWIW, FASTLAB @Thesandaddict has a great shop, proper set up and they've been through plenty YXZs to know what's up. They will get it squared up and dialed in. 💯

You aren't the only one that got rear ended, another buddy also got clipped coming back from KOH.

Man WTF is wrong with all these crazy drivers?? Are they just not paying attention? It annoys me so much and it seems to be getting worse. Thankfully my trailer didn't disconnect or else there would be a 250 gallon water tote tumbling down the road.

I cannot express enough how good it is you are alright and sorry for the damages to you and others that have been victims of distracted drivers. And i also am so very glad we moved away from So Cal two years ago. So do not miss all the crazy drivers and traffic. Country life and the occassional neccessary trip to Billings is our worst fears now 🤪🤣🤣. Will never turn back. Good lick to one and all on repairs on replacement rides. And my frame replacement and rebuild was not too bad of a job at 5 weeks to complete.

I too bounced out of CA two years ago after living there my whole life. Sad to say the place I was so proud of is turning into a poop hole. Stress level is gone and quality of life way up.
I had a bent front clip from an incident with a non attentive driver. I went with a Weller front clip but was considering a new frame. Do it yourself and save the money for improvements.
Glad everyone was safe.

Hey bro did the insurance give you an update? You keeping the machine to rebuild?
Unfortunately no. No answer yet. I'm impatiently-patiently waiting on an offer for a buy back if it ends up being totaled. If it does end up being a total, I'd like to buy it back with a salvage title, possibly use the money to build the motor and diff and turn up the boost a little bit. Or part it out, or maybe sell it as is. Still have a decision to make but I am waiting on my insurance to give me a number and I'll go from there.

Just wondering, If I do end up buying it back with a salvage title and deciding to sell as is, do you guys think anyone would be interested in buying it?

Usually the salvage title is not a problem as long as it’s priced appropriately…..

Not sure I’d buy it back just to sell, but would buy it back to repair and keep if your up for it.

But I’m sure it will all make sense when you finally get that number from the insurance Co.
Best of luck…

A lot of people will buy it. It was not a big wreck it just got rear ended. These things are easy to repair like Legos and doesn't take much tooling or know how to pull em apart and parts are reasonable cheap new and used if you know where to look.

I got off the phone with my insurance adjuster and shop doing the work today. I'm 99% certain it is not going to be declared totaled, and insurance will pay for all the damages, of course I have to pay the deductible.

So here's my idea:
The frame has to be replaced, which means it'll be stripped down to nothing, which means the motor will be pulled out. My yxz on 7 pounds of boost and stock motor hauls ass, but everyone wants a little more power. I don't mind the cost of boost ready internals and a clutch to handle higher boost, but the labor is expensive. If insurance will be paying the shop to pull the motor (along with everything else), I might as well bite the bullet and get the motor done to turn up the boost a little and do it reliably, and pay for the labor to tear down the motor. I need a new rear diff, might as well get something like a packard diff? My driveshaft is cracked, might as well get a beefier drive shaft, it needs to be replaced anyways.

Left rear shock is bent, after I just bought a set of 4 RC2's from Alan Anderson in Oregon, then had them shipped to Weller to get valved and sprung. So in the repair estimate the shop is including the cost of 2 brand new RC2's, and getting them done by Weller again. My question is instead of going with factory Fox's, has anyone had any experience with rear shocks like Kings or Elkas? If they work right out the box it'll be around the same as 2 brand new RC2's then getting them valved and sprung. Just a thought.

I know I'm probably getting ahead of myself here. My main concern is having it done by dune season. I spent all this time and money on the long travel, turbo, shocks, and other stuff and only took it out maybe 3 times before this happened. I really love Pismo, once the weather here in the central valley starts touching the 90s, its dune season. Last time I went was August 2022 and that was before the turbo and long travel, back then I was going close to every other week from June- August. I'd love to have it done by late May, but I doubt it, who knows how long it'll take for all the parts to come in.

Just take it one step at a time I guess, my main goal is to have all the parts needed on order ASAP, then see the price of rods, pistons, clutching, injectors, estimated labor on my end, etc., and go from there...
